Commonly referred to as MT, Machine translation is one of the most common uses of AI in the translation industry. It is the process of automatically converting text from one language to another using a pre-trained engine and linguistic models. A common worry is whether machines are good enough to operate alone and whether they are ready to handle domain specific texts. At Avantpage, we have trained our own engines to be language and domain specific, and every single output is verified by a human linguist. Avantpage also offers a standalone MTPE service, a post-editing step to review output from machine translation.

Translation Memory (TM)

Translation memory (TM), on the other hand, is a tool that saves approved translations of text for reuse in future projects. Each TM is client-specific and is used to ensure consistency, reduce costs, and shorten delivery cycles.

Machine translation and translation memory tools are even more powerful when they work together. When you send us a file for translation, we always check it against your translation memory to see if we have translated parts of it previously. Once we have identified any new sections of text, these are candidates for machine translation. When those sections are translated and approved by our reviewers, they can be saved in the translation memory for reuse. Thanks to this workflow, the tools become more and more efficient with every project.
